The University of Illinois maintains some of the most active student organizations of any architecture program in the country. Through participation in these organizations, students enrich and enhance their academic experience. Every year student organizations organize an impressive range of programming, including portfolio workshops, office visits, short technology classes and an annual open house. Students actively participate in the governance of the school through the Architecture Student Advisory Council.

The Illinois precursor of Gargoyle was the Psi Mu Fraternity, which was founded in the Spring of 1914. The fraternity reorganized as the second branch of the Gargoyle Society with approval from the Alpha Chapter at Cornell University.
