Architecture Computing: Remote Access
Prerequisites:
If you plan to access your files from a place not on the campus network (apartment, non-university dormitory) you will need to use the CITES VPN (Virtual Private Network) software. Essentially this software makes your computer "act" like it is on the campus network. Running it involves a software download from CITES located at http://www.cites.uiuc.edu/vpn/ - please read the installation and usage instructions which CITES provides. This method will also allow you to print to School of Architecture printers from your personal computer (FAQ #13), from home (you still have to manually pick up the printout, though). The VPN is supported by CITES at the website above and Arch-Computing does not have any control over the VPN.
Connecting With Windows:
These instructions will work on Windows 2000/XP/Vista machine. Macs running OS X, while not officially supported by Architecture Computing, can connect to our filserver also.
1. If you are on the campus network (e.g. ISR, FAR, your studio in TBH), skip this step and proceed to step 2. If you are not on the campus network (an apartment, Chicago, non-univesity dormitory), you must complete this step. Install the CITES VPN software from http://www.cites.uiuc.edu/vpn/. Follow all directions carefully! Start the software, and connect, once it is installed.
2. Open up "My Network Places" (available from My Computer, in the sidebar on the left), then choose "Add a Network Place". If you are prompted to join an MSN Community, opt to "Choose another network location". This will produce the window pictured here. Enter the following in the box:
\\arch-students\classes\ - if you want to access the Classes folder
\\arch-students\users\ - if you want to access the Users directory

3. Press "Next", and you will be prompted to input your
username and password. Enter your UIUC NetID and your AD password (the same password you use to login to School of Architecture lab computers). When entering your NetID, make sure you preface it with "uiuc\", as in the illustration below.

4. Once you have successfully authenticated, you'll be given the chance to name this Network Place. Once you have done so, it will appear in your My Network Places as a folder, and will behave just like the folders you use in the lab and studio to access your filespace. You might want to make a shortcut to this network place on your desktop to save yourself a step when accessing it.
Connecting With OS X:
2. Go to the Finder, and Under the "Go" menu, select "Connect to Server..." You will be presented with a dialog that looks like the one below; enter one of the following into the Server Address box:
smb://arch-students/classes/ - if you want to access the Classes folder
smb://arch-students/users/ - if you want to access the Users directory
We reccomend that you add these addresses to your favorites, by clicking the plus sign to the right of the address, so that you will not need to re-type them in the future (the "Connect to Server" command can be run by pressing Command-K from the Finder). Alternatively, once connected, you could drag the network drive icon to your Macintosh HD to make a shortcut for future use.

3. If you have not connected to the server before, you will be asked to log in: Enter your UIUC NetID and your AD password (the same password you use to login to School of Architecture lab computers).
4. That's it! The network folders should act like any other drive on your system - they can be mounted and unmounted, and files can be dragged and dropped to and from them.
