Architecture Computing: Remote Access

Architecture Computing: Remote Access

By utilizing the remote access features of your operating system, you can access your personal Z: drive and Class folders either from your apartment, non-university dormitory, or basically anywhere with an internet connection.

Additionally, the instructions below will allow you to connect to the Architecture servers wirelessly from studio and allow you to print to the School of Architecture printers from your personal computer at home or wirelessly from studio (see FAQ #13).

For remote accessing, it essentially involves two steps:

1. Configure a Virtual Private Network (VPN). The setup will differ based on the operating system located on your machine. For Windows 2000/XP, you will have to download the free VPN software from CITES. For Windows Vista/7 or Mac OS X, you will have to configure the built-in VPN within your operating system. To do this, navigate to the CITES VPN configuration instructions at http://www.cites.illinois.edu/vpn/. Make sure to pick the correct operating system and read the instructions carefully, then return back to this site proceeding to step two below. NOTE: The VPN is supported by CITES at the website above or by your operating system. Arch-Computing does not have any control over the VPN process.

2. Navigate to the Architecture Z: drive or Class folders. Make sure your VPN is configured correctly according to CITES VPN instructions and that the VPN is running (if your are not on the campus network e.g. ISR, FAR, your studio in TBH) before you proceed.

You will have to navigate to the Architecture server where the folder you are trying to reach is located at. This involves entering the address associated with that folder. Choose your operating system below to connect:

 Windows 2000/XP:

1a. If you are outside the campus network (e.g. an apartment, Chicago, non-university         dorm), make sure your VPN is connected following step one above. Otherwise, if you are on the campus network (e.g. ISR, FAR, your studio in TBH) proceed to step 2a.

2a. Open up "My Network Places" (available from My Computer, in the sidebar on the left), then choose "Add a Network Place". If you are prompted to join an MSN Community, opt to "Choose another network location". This will produce the window pictured here. Enter the following address in the box:

\\arch-students\classes\ - if you want to access the Classes folder
\\arch-students\users\    - if you want to access the Users directory

Windows' "Add Network Place" dialog.

3a. Press Next, and you will be prompted to input your username and password. Enter your UIUC NetID and your AD password (the same password you use to login to School of Architecture lab computers). When entering your NetID, make sure you preface it with "uiuc\", as in the illustration below.

Windows Authentication dialog.

4a. Once you have successfully authenticated, you'll be given the chance to name this Network Place. Once you have done so, it will appear in your My Network Places as a folder, and will behave just like the folders you use in the lab and studio to access your file space. You might want to make a shortcut to this network place on your desktop to save yourself a step when accessing it.

Windows Vista/7:

1b. If you are outside the campus network (e.g. an apartment, Chicago, non-university         dorm), make sure your VPN is connected following step one above. Otherwise, if you are on the campus network (e.g. ISR, FAR, your studio in TBH) proceed to step 2b.

2b. Click on "Computer" either from the Start Menu or from the shortcut on your desktop. Right click anywhere within a blank area inside the right pane of the Explorer Window. Select "Add a Network Location." The wizard window will open. Click Next.

3b.Select "Choose a custom network location" then click Next. This will produce the window pictured here. Enter the following address in the box:

\\arch-students\classes\ - if you want to access the Classes folder
\\arch-students\users\    - if you want to access the Users directory

4b. Click Next. You will be prompted to input your username and password. Enter your UIUC NetID and your AD password (the same password you use to login to School of Architecture lab computers). When entering your NetID, make sure you preface it with "uiuc\", as in the illustration below.

5b. Press OK, and you will be prompted to type in a name for the network location. You can leave it to the default.

6b. Click Next. If inputted correctly, you should receive confirmation that the network location was successfully added. Check "Open this network location when I click finish." Once you have done so, the server folder will appear.

After completing this step the first time for each respective folder, you can connect to the Architecture servers simply by going to "My Network Places" (accessed from the "Computer" Explorer Window). It will behave just like the folders you use in the lab to access your file space. You might want to make a shortcut to this network place on your desktop to save yourself a step when accessing it.

7b. Alternatively, if you wish to access file space quickly without creating a shortcut in your "My Network Places," click on the Start Menu and enter the following address in the Search Box as shown in the image below:

\\arch-students\classes\ - if you want to access the Classes folder
\\arch-students\users\    - if you want to access the Users directory

Vista/7 search box

Mac OS X:

1c. If you are outside the campus network (e.g. an apartment, Chicago, non-university dorm), make sure your VPN is connected following step one above. Otherwise, if you are on the campus network (e.g. ISR, FAR, your studio in TBH) proceed to step 2c.

2c. Go to the Finder, and under the "Go" menu, select "Connect to Server..." You will be presented with a dialog that looks like the one below; enter one of the following into the Server Address box:

smb://arch-students.ad.uiuc.edu/classes - if you want to access the Classes folder
smb://arch-students.ad.uiuc.edu/users    - if you want to access the Users directory

We recommend that you add these addresses to your favorites, by clicking the plus sign to the right of the address, so that you will not need to re-type them in the future (the "Connect to Server" command can be run by pressing Command-K from the Finder). Alternatively, once connected, you could drag the network drive icon to your Macintosh HD to make a shortcut for future use.

3c. If you have not connected to the server before, you will be asked to log in: Enter your UIUC NetID and your AD password (the same password you use to login to School of Architecture lab computers).

OS X Authentication dialog.

4. That's it! The network folders should act like any other drive on your system - they can be mounted and unmounted, and files can be dragged and dropped to and from them.
