Architecture Computing: Remote Access

Prerequisites:

In order to be able to print from a personal computer in studio, it is first necessary to complete the Application for Student Network Connectivity. It is also possible to bring your laptop to TBH 20, and print from there, without completing the aforementioned connectivity application. Connecting to School of Architecture printers is not recommended when utilizing the UIUCnet wireless network. However, one may print from home (off campus - as in: not on the University network), in conjunction with the UIUCnet VPN software.

Adding a Printer

The following instructions are for a Windows XP Professional machine (which we strongly recommend); there is one difference with XP Home noted below.

1. Open up My Computer, then enter "\\arch-lab-nts\" in the address box. You will be prompted to input your user name and password.

2.Enter your UIUC NetID and your AD password (the same password you use to login to School of Architecture lab computers). When entering your NetID, make sure you preface it with "uiuc\", as in the illustration below. Do not forget to check the "Remember my password" box; this setting enables your print account to be charged when printing to a School of Architecture printer. If this is not checked, print jobs sent to School of Architecture printers will silently fail.

If you are using Windows XP Home, you will not have the option of saving your password, meaning that you will need to repeat step one every time you wish to print. If you do use XP Home, we find it convenient to make a shortcut on the desktop to "\\arch-lab-nts\". Do this by right clicking on the desktop, and selecting "New" > "Shortcut". For the location, enter "\\arch-lab-nts\" (without the quotes, of course). Double clicking this shortcut will bring up a prompt to login if you have not already.

After logging in, you will be presented with a list of printers to choose from:

3. Simply double-click on the printers you wish to install to your machine. After selecting the printer, a dialog box will appear asking whether to trust the drivers which will be installed automatically with the printer - click "Yes" (you do trust us, right?).

That's all folks! Enjoy printing from the comfort of your studio!
