Architecture Computing: Password Information

What's up with all these Passwords?

As you have probably figured out, there are many passwords that you need to know in order to access the various computer services on campus. Just for starters, you have your email password, your CITES computer lab password, your NetID (aka Kerberos aka Bluestem) password, your enterprise password, and your your AD Password(Active Directory Password), sometimes known as your Windows password. For info on knowing what each of these passwords does and how to change each of these passwords, visit http://www.cites.uiuc.edu/passwords/changes.html.

Passwords in Architecture

In Architecture we have tried to minimize the burden that these passwords represent by, as much as possible, plugging into the campus' existing password infrastructure so that you don't have to have a special Architecture password as well. Because of thies, Architecture uses the AD Password exclusively for all of our functions. In some cases you may be asked to reset your AD password. This can be done at http://accounts.ad.uiuc.edu, but in order to do so, you will need your NetID (aka Kerberos aka Bluestem) password. If you do not know what your NetID password is, your only choice is to go down to room 1211 DCL to reset it manually.

You may also have to use your AD password to authenticate to certain web pages or server operations (the ones that pop up with an authentication dialog box rather than taking you to a seperate login page). If you encounter one of the web pages, be sure to preface your NetID with "uiuc\" when you log in. For example, user Jane Doe (NetID=janedoe) would log in as uiuc\janedoe.

Lab and Studio Logins

When you log in to a lab or studio machine in the School of Architecture, you are presented with a three-line dialog box (after you breeze through the information-packed but widely ignored message window that comes up when you press Ctl-Alt-Del, which if more people read would answer many questions before they are asked, but I digress). The first two lines of the box (User name and Password) are very straightforward; it is the third box (Log in to) must be set on UIUC for you to login using your AD Password. Sometimes the third box may be hidden unless you press the "Options" button.

Account Lockouts

It will sometimes happen that, after a number a failed login attempts (approximately 5 within one hour), your account will be locked out and when you try to log in you will get an error message telling you that your account has been disabled. If this happens, you can do one of two things:

Wait for an hour, after which your account will automatically unlock itself, or
Go to the Active Directory Accounts web page (http://accounts.ad.uiuc.edu) and manually unlock it. You can do this from a lab machine by using the generic login & password: arch-archlab (both login and password are the same).

Changing Your Passwords

Fortunately, CITES provides web interfaces for changing just about all of your passwords. Here are links to them (note that they all require you to know your NetID password first, and if you don't, you have to go to 1420 DCL):

To change passwords... Go to these web sites:
Active Directory (AD): http://accounts.ad.uiuc.edu
