Overview

Discover Architecture is a two week program offered at the School of Architecture at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign campus where high school juniors, seniors, and beginning college students have the opportunity to get introduced to architectural graphics, design, modeling, and computer-based programs.  Discover Architecture students learn about the roles and responsibilities of architects in relation to design, the profession, and the environment.  A daylong trip to Columbus, IN gives students a chance to interact with and experience architecture by famous architects.  Discover Architecture exposes students to a university atmosphere, complete with dorm living and architectural studio space.

Program

Discover Architecture is a rigorous and involved program, and it requires students to engage in a mature and informed way.  Instruction, lectures, and films led by faculty are scheduled throughout the day, and the evenings offer opportunities to explore the campus and recreation facilities with fellow students.  During the two-week session, students engage in a series of exercises including drafting, modeling, composition, computer modeling, design, and presentation, which leads to a comprehensive architectural design project.   Students work with faculty, teaching assistants, and each other in one-on-one and group critiques to discuss and improve upon their individual designs.  The final product is displayed in a gallery at the end of the session for students, parents, and faculty.

With successful completion of the program, the School of Architecture formally recognizes the student's efforts with a certificate noting their participation in Discover Architecture. Please understand that completion of the program does not guarantee admission to the University of Illinois.

Studio

The design process in the architectural design studio is the primary emphasis of the program.  The design studio environment is a major factor in facilitating comprehensive design and interaction amongst the students and faculty.  Each student receives his or her own desk, which is open to the rest of the studio.  A sense of inclusion between the students is important in easing conversations about design.  Mornings and afternoons are spent in studio where students apply information from the morning session into their design solutions. Throughout the two weeks, students work on a series of short design exercises related to a single, comprehensive, architectural design project.

Field Trip - Columbus, IN

The highlight for many students is a daylong trip to Columbus, IN where students interact with architecture by architects like Eliel and Eero Saaranen, Gunnar Birkerts, Kevin Roche, and many more.  The field trip includes multiple tours and videos, which facilitates discussions with the people of Columbus, IN on how great architecture has influenced their well-being.  The field trip to Columbus, IN is in the middle of the session so students may apply design techniques and elements they observe on the field trip to their own designs in studio.  This is a great opportunity for students to experience and reinforce design principles taught during the two-week program.

Seminars, Films, and Computer Applications

Each day School of Architecture faculty and visiting professionals demonstrate and discuss architecture and the design process.  These lectures introduce new topics that broaden a student’s understanding of architecture.  An entire lecture on architecture as a career path, the processes involved with licensure, architectural education, and the application process enables students to understand the different outlets available to pursue architecture as a career.

During the evening, students view films and slides introducing architects, ideas, and architectural projects to further explore architecture.

Students have a unique opportunity to utilize the expertise and technology the School of Architecture has to offer with the school computer labs.  Faculty and teaching assistants lead students on how to use and implement computer applications used by students and architects in the profession.  Students are able to use programs to aid in their design process and produce 3-D computer models and architectural renderings for the final gallery exhibit.

Accommodations

Students live and eat in a supervised University residence hall in the heart of campus, enabling the students to experience what life as a college student might be like.  The residence hall is in close proximity to the design studio, School of Architecture buildings, and campus recreation centers.  After daily instruction, students are able to interact and get to know one other in community spaces in the dorms.  Resident assistants are available to supervise and lead students on trips to campus town and campus recreation.  The program provides all meals via the residence hall cafeteria, including an end of session pizza party.
