Mark Taylor
Assistant Professor
With a background in three-dimensional design, Mark Taylor has worked in
the fields of interior design, construction management, architecture,
and scenic construction for the film industry. While living in Southeast
Asia during the 1990’s, he helped establish the Penang Arts Center,
Malaysia, where he taught design and photography. In 1997 Mark was
appointed to a remote village in Sri Lanka, working for the British
development organization Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO). During his
two and a half year appointment he taught carpentry and was advisor to
the village metal foundry. In collaboration with Ena de Silva and
Geoffrey Bawa, Mark worked on interior installations in hotels and Sri
Lanka’s World Trade Center in Colombo.
With a MArch from the Illinois Institute of Technology, Mark has
continued to pursue his interest in knowledge transfer and service
learning opportunities for students. His work in the developing world
aims to blend technical knowledge with practical application. His work
in Haiti includes a 5,000 sq. ft. high school and designs for a water
distribution network for a market-town with a population of approx.
35,000.
Bridging the disciplines of design and technology within the
architecture Mark Taylor currently teaches the introductory level
technology class “Anatomy of Buildings” and is the faculty project
manager for the University of Illinois’ Solar Decathlon project.
