As one of the oldest and largest architecture programs in the country, the School has alumni practicing and teaching across the country and around the world. Since Nathan C. Ricker was the first to graduate with an architecture degree from an American university in 1872, our alumni have been continuously recognized as leaders of the profession, pioneers in design and technology, and distinguished scholars. In 1873 Nathan Clifford Ricker graduated from the University of Illinois with the first degree in architecture granted by an American University. After studying in Europe, he returned to the University to formally establish a Department of Architecture.
