D E S I G N  B R I E F

The goal of the 2014 - 2015 Design Build competition is to link the upper west entry plaza of Temple Buell Hall to it’s neighboring lower courtyard, encouraging students and members of the community to enjoy both spaces. Competition entries should link the courtyards while creating spaces conducive to interaction. Teams should strive to create a sense of community and a place for open conversation.

 

S I T E  L O C A T I O N

Students are allowed to use any of the upper west exterior plaza of Temple Buell Hall, as well as the lower exterior atrium courtyard. The prairie field along the western hill next to the steps leading to the courtyard is off limits. Nothing is allowed to obstruct the egress of the staircase. Any questions or con- cerns regarding constraints can be addressed to the Make Series team at designbuild.isoa@gmail.com

 

A W A R D S  A N D   F U N D I N G

$250 will be awarded to each of the initial three teams picked by the jury members. These three teams will continue on with revisions to be judged by the same jury for possible construction.

$1,800 will be allocated for construction of the winning team’s design. This money will be controlled by the school through a separate account, with the winning team working alongside the Make Series cura- tors and ISoA faculty/staff to purchase construction materials.

J U R Y

The jury for the competition will consist of three faculty members as well as two students from the school. The faculty members are Professor Jeffery Poss, Professor Sara Bartumeus, and Fabrication Coordinator Hugh Swiatek. The two students, one from each degree program, will be announced at a later date.

 

C H A R R E T T E /  F A C U L T Y     C R I T I Q U E    D A Y

There will be an all day Charette / Faculty Critique day on Saturday, January 24th held in TBH. This event is sponsered by the school as a full day for teams to work on their projects as well as get feed- back from faculty on their designs before submission one week later. A number of faculty will assist throughout the day starting at 10am - 5pm . The list of participating faculty will be announced before the event. Lunch and other refreshments / snacks will be provided for participating teams. If your team plans to attend this event, please inform us during registration on December 10th.

 

T E A M S  A N D    R E G I S T R A T I O N

Students entering the competition will be allowed to create teams of up to 5 persons. At least one of those students needs to be an ISoA student, the rest of the team can be from other schools within the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. You are not required to be on a team in order to enter the competition, solo entries are accepted.

 

There will be a $5 per person fee to enter the competition. Teams consisting of 3 different class lev- els will have the fee waived (Ex. A team consisting of a junior, sophomore and 3 grad students will not have to pay the $25 total for their 5 member team.) All money collected for the competition will go

towards the Charette / Critique day on Janurary 24th as well as the exhibit reception on February 2nd.

 

All participating teams need to register on December 10th between 5:30-6:00pm in the TBH atrium/ gallery. Teams will also need to decide whether or not they will be attending the Charette / Critique day on Saturday, January 24th. If you or your team are unable to attend the registration deadline on De- cember 10th, please email designbuild.isoa@gmail.com before the deadline to confirm your entry and set up a time to pay. Teams that do not register or contact us on or before December 10th but still wish to participate will have until the last day of the semester, December 19th by 5pm to register with a $10 per team late fee, even if your team is eligible for the waiver.

Wednesday, December 10 - Team Registration and Organization – TBH Atrium / Gallery Saturday, January 24 - Design Charrette / Faculty Critique – TBH Atrium / Gallery

Monday, February 2 – Competition submissions due by 5pm in the TBH atrium. An exhibition of the completed work will take place starting at 5:30 with the student vote happening during this reception.

Friday, February 6 – 3 teams are announced to move to the revision round of the competition. Wednesday, February 25 - Revisions due for 3 continuing groups

Monday, March 2 – Final competition winners announced Friday, April 3 - Sunday, April 5 - Build Weekend 1

Friday, April 10 - Sunday, April 12 - Build Weekend 2
