New Faculty

ERIK HEMINGWAY
Associate Professor – Design

Erik Hemingway joins the faculty of the School of Architecture this fall where he will be teaching in the Design program. Erik received his Bachelor of Architecture, with honors, from California Polytechnic State University and his Master of Science in Advanced Architectural Design at the School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation in New York.

Erik has been a Visiting Professor/Lecturer at numerous universities since 1994 and has been Principal of hemingway+a/studio since 1999.  With his ten years of teaching experience as an adjunct and full-time professor, it has afforded him to elaborate research on the city of Los Angeles and Detroit in continuation of his thesis Television City undertaken at Columbia University in 1991.

 

VIDAR LERUM
Assistant Professor – Design & Sustainability

Vidar Lerum joins the faculty of the School of Architecture this fall where he will be teaching Design & Sustainability. Vidar received his M.S. in Building Design from Arizona State University, Tempe, and his Ph.D. from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.

Vidar has most recently been an Assistant Professor at Arizona State University and is owner of Lerum, Inc. He currently has a book project to be published by John Wiley & Sons, Inc. titled, “How Great Buildings Work” (work on the design and analysis of high-performance, energy-efficient buildings). 

 

ARELI MARINA
Assistant Professor – History & Preservation

Areli Marina joins the faculty of the School of Architecture this fall where she will be teaching in the History & Preservation program. Areli received her BA from Harvard University and her PhD from the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University.

The fellowships that supported her dissertation research include a prestigious two-year Rome Prize at the American Academy in Rome, one of the leading American overseas centers for independent study and advanced research in the fine arts and the humanities. Professor Marina has developed an ambitious plan for future publications that includes two books and articles on topics as diverse as the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II’s town planning and the sale of William Randolph Hearst’s art collection in 1941. She has also begun an important new project focusing on the enigmatic monumental baptisteries of medieval Italy.

 

 

JOHN STALLMEYER
Assistant Professor – Design

John Stallmeyer joins the faculty of the School of Architecture starting this fall where he will be teaching in the Design program. John received his B.S. in Architectural Studies and his Master of Architecture from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and his PhD from the University of California – Berkeley.

For the past two years John has been a Visiting Assistant Professor in the School of Architecture’s Design program here at UIUC. John has received numerous honors and awards, including the Fulbright Fellow for his field research in Bangalore, India, in 2002, and was ranked as an Excellent Instructor by his students here at UIUC in fall 2004.

 

ALLISON WARREN
Instructor – Design

Allison Warren joins the faculty of the School of Architecture starting this fall where she will be teaching 50% with SOA and 50% with Art & Design. Allison received her Bachelor of Arts (BA) at the University of California – Berkeley, and her Master of Fine Art (MFA) at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan.

For the past five years Allison has been an adjunct lecturer at the College of Art and Design at Lawrence Technological University in Southfield, Michigan and an Academic Advisor at LTU for the past three years. Allison is also a Design Associate with Hemingway + A/Studio in Detroit, Michigan where she is a design consultant/writer for award-winning architectural projects, installations and conceptual proposals. Allison is also listed in the 2005 edition of the Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers publication, a student nominated recognition given to 1% of post-secondary teachers nationally.

 

New Adjunct Faculty

 

OLIVIER HENRY
Visiting Lecturer  – History & Preservation

Olivier Henry joins us this fall as a Visiting Lecturer in the History & Preservation program.

Olivier received his Bachelor of History, his Master’s of Political History and his MA in History and Archaeology from the University of Bordeaux, and completed his Doctorate with a degree of “Mention trés honorable et félicitations du Jury”.

Olivier is an Associated Researcher with Ausonius Research Center and the French Institute of Anatolian Studies in Istanbul (IFEA). He has been on numerous excavations and has taught Greek History and Computers in Archaeology at the Universities of Nantes and Bordeaux.

 

 

JAMES KNIGHT, FAIA
Visiting Professor – Design

Jim Knight joins us this fall as a Visiting Professor in the Design program.

Jim received his B.Arch from Oklahoma State University and his M.Arch from the University of Illinois. Prior to his retirement from Ohio State University, Jim was Head of OSU since 1990. He also taught at Oklahoma State University, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and was Acting Director of the Versailles Study Abroad Program at UIUC. Jim currently is a Design consultant as JFK Architect, FAIA.

 

SUDARSHAN KRISHNAN
Visiting Lecturer – Structures

Sudarshan Krishnan joins us this fall as a Visiting Lecturer in the Structures program.

Sudarshan received his B.Arch at the University of Mumbai, his M.S. in Architecture in History and Theory at Texas A&M University, and his M.Arch in Structures and his M.S. in Civil Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Sudarshan has been a Visiting Lecturer in our Study Abroad Program in Versailles since fall 2005.

 

CARL LEWIS
Visiting Assistant Professor – Design

Carl Lewis joins us this fall as a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Design Program. Carl will teach 50% with the School of Architecture and 50% with Facilities & Services, Planning Division, where he is currently a Capital Planning Specialist. Carl received both his B.S. in Architectural Studies and his M.Arch from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He was previously an Assistant Professor and Adjunct Professor with the School of Architecture.

 

ELLEN MILLS
Visiting Assistant Professor – Design

Ellen Mills joins us this fall as a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Design Program.

ALAN HALVORSEN
Visiting Assistant Professor – Design

Alan Halvorsen joins us this fall as a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Design Program.

 

CHRISTOPHER ROCKEY
Dean E. and Avis R. Hilfinger Faculty Fellow in Architecture

Chris Rockey joins us this fall as the Dean E. and Avis R. Hilfinger Faculty Fellow in Architecture.
Chris Rockey is the principal of Rockey Structures, LLC, in addition to being an Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago. School of Architecture, and has over 10 years of experience in the structural engineering field from initial conception through construction phase services.
Prior to teaching and starting his own practice, Mr. Rockey served as an Associate for Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, an international A/E firm with over 700 employees worldwide, as well as being a Project Engineer for Halvorson Kaye Structural Engineers. His design projects have included office, residential, civic, renovation, urban, and transportation facilities. In coordination with the architectural and building services teams, he incorporates the structural engineering design concepts within project requirements. Mr. Rockey, drawing upon his experience in the architectural, engineering, and construction fields, provides engineering consultation that combines aesthetics, constructability, and efficiency.
