February 6-28, 2004

This studio provided students an opportunity to design a multi-functional super-tall building in Chicago's Loop district. It examined the unique role high-rise buildings play in their urban and cultural contexts by researching and analyzing precedent high-rise architecture, including their history, structural and technological contributions, as well as their impact on the urban habitat. The integration of structural systems, a multi-use program, and building systems was emphasized throughout the design process.
As in the case of all tall buildings, collaboration is an essential component of the design process. The students worked with architects and engineers from Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP (SOM) and School of Architecture faculty in developing their tall building design proposals for the 7 South Dearborn site.
