Professor Robert I. Selby Becomes Fellow of the American Institute of Architects

Professor Robert I. Selby, Associate Director for Graduate Studies, recently received a letter from the Secretary of the American Institute of Architects, Larry Livergood, which was addressed to "Robert I. Selby, FAIA" giving away what news the letter contained.

"Congratulations! It is our sincere pleasure to inform you that you have been elevated to the College of Fellows of The American Institute of Architects. The Jury of Fellows selected you for elevation to Fellowship in the Institute because of your notable contributions to the advancement of the profession of architecture . . . "

Professor Selby was nominated for Fellowship by AIA Central Illinois for his career as an educator. He has served as President of AIA Illinois, AIA Central Illinois, and AIA Champaign-Urbana and now serves on the national board as a Director representing the Illinois Region.

The College of Fellows was founded in 1952 by the Institute to stimulate fellowship among architects, promote the purposes of the AIA, and advance the profession of architecture. The establishment of the College of Fellows formalized the procedures for the investiture of fellowship, an honor that dates to the earliest days of the Institute.

With the exception of the Gold Medal, fellowship is the highest honor the AIA can bestow on a member. Fellowship is conferred on members with at least 10 years of continuous membership who have made significant contributions to the aesthetic, scientific, and practical efficiency of the profession; to the standards of architectural education, training, and practice; to the building industry through leadership of the AIA and other related professional organizations; to the advancement of the living standards of people through their improved environment and to society through significant public service.

Professor Selby will be invested in the College of Fellows at the 2004 National Convention in Chicago.  The Investiture Ceremony will be held at 3:30pm on Friday, June 11, 2004, in the Rockefeller Chapel on the campus of the University of Chicago. The chapel was designed in 1918 by Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue, FAIA and completed after his death.
