Jaime
Torres Carmona, founding Principal of Canopy / architecture +
design, is an architect living & practicing in Chicago. At
Canopy / a+d, Jaime focuses on resource- and climate-driven
design for residential, commercial, civic, and community-based
projects. Having lived in two densely populated cities, Mexico
City and Chicago, Jaime quickly developed a passion &
sensitivity for people, context, buildings, and technology.
After receiving his BSAS and MArch degrees from the University
of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Jaime was awarded the 2001
Ryerson Traveling Fellowship for a study in The Netherlands.
This provided Jaime with great exposure to new solutions in
urban design and multi-family living. Following this experience
Jaime worked as Project Architect with a number of award-winning
Chicago firms including McBride Kelley Baurer, Booth Hansen and
Urban Works.
Here Jaime provided leadership on a wide range of projects
including the LEED Gold-UNO Charter School in Chicago, recipient
of the 2010 Driehaus Award for Architectural Excellence in
Community Design. Prior to pursuing his own practice, Jaime was
awarded the Baker Traveling Fellowship where he spent six weeks
in Germany studying low- and high-tech solutions for the
building envelope.
