Biography

Mr. Burns joined Thornton Tomasetti in 1995 and has over 25 years of experience designing structures as well as investigating and renovating existing buildings. He specializes in the design of complex structural systems, including earthquake engineering and dynamic analysis. As Managing Principal, he is responsible for preparation of drawings and specifications and coordination of outside consultants.

Named to ENR's "Top 25 Newsmakers" for 2003, Mr. Burns is noted for promoting a closer integration of architecture and engineering through technical innovation, collaboration in practice and leadership in building science education. He has served as an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Architecture at the University of Illinois at Chicago and the Illinois Institute of Technology and is an avid member of several engineering and architecture associations. Mr. Burns earned a bachelor’s degree in architecture from the University of Notre Dame and master’s degrees in architecture and civil engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Mr. Burns is a peer reviewer for the General Services Administration’s Design Excellence and Construction Excellence programs

 

About Michael J. Theiss

An Illinois alumnus, Michael J. Theiss (1947-2000) received his bachelor of Architecture in 1970 and a master of Science in Architectural Engineering in 1971. He was a partner in the office of James Ruderman, a New York City structural engineering firm. The Michael J. Theiss Memorial Fund was established to encourage and promote the study of structures in architecture and to facilitate interaction between students and practicing architects and structural engineers.
