Plym Professor Lecture Series
Kalevi Aho was born in southern Finland. After studying under Rautavaara at the Sibelius Academy and under Blacher in West Berlin, he moved on to become a Musicology lecturer at Helsinki University and later a Professor of Composition at the Sibelius Academy. Since 1993 he has worked as a freelance composer. He has written four Operas, fourteen Symphonies, seven smaller-scale Orchestral works, thirteen Concerti, and twelve Chamber works.
Kalevi's lecture is in conjunction with the Plym Distinguished Professor in-residence this fall, Juhani Pallasmaa. A unique aspect of Juhani's visit with us is the dedicated lecture series speakers, all associated with Juhani's architectural interest in "phenomenology." Current lecturers include Carlos Jiminez on September 13; Alberto Perez-Gomez on October 18; as well as two notable Finnish artists: Ceramist, Kristina Riska on September 2; and Composer, Kalevi Aho on October 20.
