AIA Illinois Annual Honor Awards

Policies for Action (P4A) today announced $248,250 in grant funding for a research project on which Lynne Dearborn, PhD, associate professor in the School of Architecture, College of Fine and Applied Arts, will serve as co-principal investigator, along with the principal investigator, Sherry Ahrentzen, PhD, professor at the University of Florida Shimberg Center for Housing Studies.

A group of 11 students spent four days this fall measuring every inch of the Paul Schweikher House in Schaumburg, which architect Paul Schweikher built in 1937 as his home and studio. They are now producing detailed drawings of the home, which Schweikher called an “essay in brick, redwood and glass.” The students are part of architecture professor Paul Kapp’s course on recording historic buildings. The Olympic Tribute, first dedicated in 1991 and designed by Professor Jeffery Poss, FAIA, was recognized in a 25th Anniversary ceremony at Dodd's Park on Saturday October 1, 2016. The event included the induction of five new athletes into the Monument.

For the event, the Tribute was re-landscaped with native species of Prairie Dropseed, Butterfly Weed, and Lady’s Mantle. It also has a new mow strip and other improvements.

Ground was broken earlier this month on the Vista Tower development in Chicago, designed by Studio Gang Architects, a firm founded and led by Illinois alumna Jeanne Gang (BSAS 1986).

The Illinois School of Architecture’s Master of Architecture degree program is among DesignIntelligence Quarterly’s “Top 25 Programs 2016-17 According to Hiring Professionals.” The ranking of NAAB-accredited degree programs appears in DI’s Q3 2016 issue, just released. DI compiles the rankings after a wide-ranging survey of “professional practitioners who hire and supervise” graduates of architecture programs.
