Computing Info for New Architecture Graduate Students

Computing Info for New Architectural Studies Students

Summary

This document provides an overview of student computing needs and recommends minimum specifications for new computer purchases for graduate students studying toward an M. Arch degree at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. (Updated for: Fall 2005)

Introduction

Computers are an integral part of higher education and professional practice in architecture. Computers are used to access, manipulate, and create vast quantities and many types of information. Students in the architectural studies program at Illinois use computers for many tasks, from simple e-mail communications to advanced simulations of building systems.

The School of Architecture maintains two Windows-based computer labs for our students. These labs are often full – not surprising, considering there are almost 800 students in the School of Architecture – which is why more than 90% of our students own computers.

The School of Architecture has developed these guidelines and recommendations to help new students purchase computer hardware and software that will best meet the specialized needs of architectural computing, based on the experiences of current students.

Notebook or Desktop?

The School of Architecture strongly recommends purchasing a notebook computer with wireless networking capability. A portable computer can be used in your dorm room and in studio, at a coffee shop or on the quad. Notebooks are also helpful if you plan to study abroad. An increasing number of locations on the Urbana campus provide wireless Internet access, including Temple Hoyne Buell Hall, parts of the Architecture Building, future parts of the Art Annex (est. Spr 07) the Undergraduate Library, and the Illini Union.
