Assistant Professor Positions in Architectural Design

The School of Architecture in the College of Fine and Applied Arts seeks applications for two full-time, nine-month Assistant Professor level faculty positions beginning August 16, 2008. With leadership from its Director and faculty, the School is forging new opportunities for its BSAS, M.Arch, MSAS and PhD programs. The School is internationally acclaimed for its strengths in design, structures, technology, and architectural history.  The University of Illinois is a Research I institution located in a vibrant, growing community recognized as a major center for the arts and technology. It has outstanding resources and facilities for teaching, design, scholarship, and research, including its world-class library. School resources include state-of-the-art design studios, digital fabrication laboratories, the Building Research Council, and international architecture programs in Versailles, Rome, Munich and Shanghai.

Faculty members are expected to teach in the undergraduate and graduate programs of the school.  This will include interdisciplinary teaching and research with related units and doctoral supervision. Faculty members are also expected to continually develop recognition for excellence in design, scholarship, or research and to participate in the governance of the School, College, and University while appropriately serving the profession and the public. 

Successful candidates will have the opportunity to develop studios and seminars that will impart new knowledge and innovative models of design applications and practice. In a cover letter they should propose how they could integrate these to the existing design curriculum and graduate thesis projects.

QUALIFICATIONS: M.Arch and professional registration or PhD in a field related to the position is normally required. Candidates for the position must demonstrate potential for national recognition and leadership in their respective areas.

REQUIRED SUBMISSIONS:  The following hard copy submissions are required: 1) A letter of application that states how the candidate will be able to synthesize critical thinking with advanced digital building technologies, design methods, and/or creative explorations in undergraduate and graduate studios, seminars or workshops; 2) A portfolio demonstrating innovative approaches to creative design investigations, professional work, research, and scholarship in architectural design and integration, and/or teaching (including syllabi and student work) in these areas.  These should illustrate the applicant’s strong commitment to creative achievement in architectural design;  3) A complete curriculum vitae, including postal address, telephone number(s), and e-mail address; and 4) Names of three references with contact information including email, telephone number, and affiliation.

Assistant Professor Position in Preservation and Adaptive Reuse

The School of Architecture in the College of Fine and Applied Arts seeks applications for a full-time, nine-month Assistant Professor tenure-track faculty position beginning August 16, 2008. With leadership from its Director and faculty, the School is forging new opportunities for its BSAS, M.Arch, MSAS and PhD programs. The School is internationally acclaimed for its strengths in design, structures, technology, and architectural history.  The University of Illinois is a Research I institution located in a vibrant, growing community recognized as a major center for the arts and technology. It has outstanding resources and facilities for teaching, design, scholarship, and research, including its world-class library. School resources include state-of-the-art design studios, digital fabrication laboratories, the Building Research Council, and international architecture programs in Versailles, Rome, Munich and Shanghai. Two historic downtowns, Champaign and Urbana, provide nearby opportunities for civic engagement. The American Planning Association selected historic West Urbana as one of 10 Great Neighborhoods in America for 2007.

Faculty members are expected to teach in the undergraduate and graduate programs of the school.  This will include interdisciplinary teaching and research with related units and doctoral supervision. Faculty members are also expected to continually develop recognition for excellence in design, scholarship, or research and to participate in the governance of the School, College, and University while appropriately serving the profession and the public. 

The successful candidate will demonstrate leadership in historic preservation and a vision for developing a dynamic, nationally recognized program in sustaining the built environment. 

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants should have an M.Arch degree and a degree in Historic Preservation or its equivalent, and professional registration or PhD.  The successful candidate will have a sustained record of professional experience and research in historic preservation, and will teach preservation studios and courses, participate in design studio reviews, and conduct research in such areas of expertise as preservation technology, materials conservation, historic rehabilitation, restoration, preservation planning, and the history of preservation.

Assistant/Associate Professor Position in Building Technology

Knowledge of project development, representation and delivery including advanced construction technologies such as CAD and BIM is desirable. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to develop innovative approaches to technology and design integration in undergraduate and graduate building systems courses, laboratory explorations and/or integrated design studios. Responsibilities may include design thesis and PhD advising. Candidates will have opportunities to develop research and educational initiatives with other campus units, and the profession.
